Support » Plugin: Redirection » [Plugin: Redirection] Must a Link Be Broken to Redirect?

  • I’ve got a lot of hotlinking to a specific file on my site. I now need to update the file and also would like to start getting a pageview for these links rather than just letting them link directly to the download. I have created a page for this file that I’d like to redirect the links to. I installed the redirection plugin and created a custom redirect, but when I test some of the incoming links they are still linking directly to and downloading the PDF file for the user. I have been going crazy trying to figure out what’s wrong and just started wondering that maybe I need to delete the file so the link will then be “broken.” SO MY QUESTION: Does Redirection plugin only really work to redirect broken links??

  • Okay… I was nervous to delete this without knowing, but I just bit the bullet and turns out my logic was correct. I figured I’d post the results in case it can help any future people. But the conclusion is a link MUST BE BROKEN for this redirect to work!
