• Hi, I ran into a bug with a premium plugin that would make a particular automaton feature in it useless for me, thereby not clearing up my workflow.

The plugin author has requested an admin account to ‘look at my environment’ and presumedly sort out this bug, but I’m quite leery of this proposal. It’s nothing to do with that particular author, I’m just not comfortable with trusting anyone with the same level of access that I have, one that allows for deleting other admin accounts, among other things.

What’s the precedent for this sort of request, and is there any way to have a failsafe in case something goes wrong?

  • The best thing to do is to do a complete backup (files AND database) before you do anything. Then you can allow access, and if anything does go wrong then you’ll be able to restore those backups and have your site back to where it was.

Of course, as soon as the de-bugging has stopped, you should delete the account that the plugins author was using. I’d also suggest trying to scan the files on your site to see just what changes have bene made (if you’ve got a tool that will do that for you anyway).

It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth opening up your site to someone else. I’d think the same way as you. Nothing against that author or anyone else, but when it’s one of my sites I do suffer from a bit of paranoia every now and then.

Hey catacaustic, thanks for your thoughts. Yes, I think I’ll have a complete backup before I consider anything else.

Ah, having a bit of healthy paranoia is better than blind trust I feel, especially when it comes to months upon months of work 🙂
