• Hello

I have completely reset my hosting account in despair twice to completely delete WordPress and start again but each time run into the same problem 🙂

I want to create a website that does not have “/wordpress” in the URL. SO for example purposes its abc.com I want it as http://www.abc.com not http://www.abc.com/wordpress!

I use Go Daddy (domain and web hosting) and installed WordPress from their Plesk hosting control panel for my domain. The first two times I used the quick installation ie. I changed no settings. I started using, playing with themes, adding pages etc. I soon realised as I built my site that http://www.abc.com never works, only http://www.abc.com/wordpress. So I tried the hard route to save the web pages I had built… I looked up how to change it, got an FTP software (filezilla), found the index.php file under httpdocs/wordpress folder, copied it over to my PC drive, amended the code and then copied it back one level up into httpdocs. Also amended the site address in WP dashboard to http://www.abc.com. Failed – when trying to access my site I got the blank screen with no content and “maintenance” written above it. In the end I completely wiped my domain and reinstalled WordPress

This time I went for custom installation, in the box called “Specify the location where this web application should be installed ” I deleted everything as I believed this would set everything installed in the root. I then clicked install…

This time whilst I can still get into the dashboard, when I want to click onto my site I just get a blank page identical to what happened when I tried amending the files above. No theme, no data, nothing – just “Maintenance” written in the bar above. What on earth have I done wrong??

Grateful for any advice, this is my first time creating a website 🙁

  • Hello,

Have you tried the WordPress Codex for installing WordPress ? If you haven’t, I recommend to give it a try. You can find it here.

When you’re installing WP it should ask you what directory you want WP installed on. Leave it as “/” which is the root. If it says “/ANYTHING HERE” it will then install and create whatever directory text is in there.

To Install WordPress on Your Hosting Account
Log in to your Account Manager.
    Click Web Hosting.
Next to the hosting account you want to use, click Manage.
    Go to the Applications tab.
In the WordPress section, next to Install, click the downward-facing arrow, and then click Install (Custom).
Select the domain name you want to use, enter the directory (leave this part as “/” for your goal of having it just on abc.com and not abc.com/wordpress) where you want to install WordPress, and then click Install.

I hope this helps you get the WP installed to the directory you want! ^Colby
