Playlist Name
-
Unless I’ve missed something the ability to name the playlist is needed, I have 28 pages each with a live m3u8 stream all streams named ‘mono.m3u8’ so every playlist is called ‘mono.m3u8’ which is unnecessarily confusing.

Hello blacklodgebeer,
we shorten the URL to make it easy to read in the playlist view. It seems to me that for these HLS streams we should also include the directory name. Would that give you an useful output like movin-to-the-country/mono.m3u8 ?
Or perhaps it doesn’t make sense to show that file name at all, as it’s often just stream.m3u8, index.m3u8 or so. So “HLS: movin-to-the-country” might be a good choice too.

Thanks,
MartinPerhaps I wasn’t as clear as i could have been, it simply needs a place where a custom name can be inputted, like a page/post name has a title field.
Also, as I’ve just remembered why I haven’t persevered with the plugin, is there any reason why audio can only be played on one player when multiple players are present on a page and when multiple players are on the same page is there any reason why only one autoplays? I know these are not limitations of flowplayer so must be a feature of this plugin.
Hi Blacklodgebeer,
We aren’t encouraging users to play multiple players at the same time. It’s not a very useful feature and causes quite a few performance and conflict issues.
What is your usage case?
Thanks, Alec
PS. We plan to allow you to rename your streams soon as this seems to be an issue for more users. To improve workflow would be better to do it programmatically as Martin suggest above by adding more information in the URL. We could certainly add the directory name or replace the m3u8 name with just the directory name.

It seems strange that you would discourage multiple streams, not all live streams are traditional broadcast events requiring the viewer to listen – I could understand the conflict reasoning in that scenario – but multiple proximity landscape broadcasts for example or CCTV setups, things like that can have a requirement for multiple players, particularly CCTV.
I know audio can be an issue in some circumstances, particularly when viewing on iPads although I have managed to set up three live stream video players with flowplayer all three autoplaying on iPad and have managed to get audio to play on all three simultaneously, but in standard desktop browsers these issues are relatively minor or none existent – it just seems like you are purposely reducing your potential customer base by placing unnecessary conditions on your product.
Also I do find it strange the reluctance to have the ability to give a ‘friendly name’ for each playlist, relying on deriving names from playlist urls seems to be a way of making something as user unfriendly as possible given that there’s no guarantee of any meaningful descriptive name within the url.
Thanks for your suggestions.

We do not consider WordPress (FV Player Pro is a WordPress plugin) the right place for a CCTV setup. Our target market are content publishers both big (think Netflix style sites) and small (individual news or weblog publishers). Multiple players at the same time just creates trouble.
To make great software, as Steve Jobs would say, requires taking away the superfluous. FV Player is a great video player and publishing tool. And that’s what it is.

It makes a lot more sense to name one’s files and folders properly than to do the work twice, thrice or five times with cryptic filenames everywhere. I do know that some streams require folder format though and a standard name to work best, in which case we’d have to pull a folder name.
Well-named files are far more resilient and bullet-proof and idiot-proof than a database system. We’re very cautious people and try not to leave our customers out on a limb with all their work done in the FV Player database and absolute havoc if they were ever to move CMS for instance. We don’t want to lock people in, unlike most software vendors.
Thanks, Alec

Some people don’t get that choice.
