That’s a really interesting design question. Very open-ended; I like that.
I think it depends on the aspect ratio and size. Are all three images the same aspect ratio? What’s the highest res version you have available of each image?

I should have mentioned, I’m a new WP user and definitely not a developer. So, I’d appreciate any ideas in “average” user lingo.
Aspect ratio basically means, portrait or landscape? More precisely it means, well, the ratio: 4:3 is common on point and shoot cameras, 3:2 is common on SLR cameras.
Highest res means, what size in pixels is your largest copy of each image? If you have just thumbnail versions, then that limits your options.
