• Hi there! I think this is going to be a bit of a long post so please bear with me.

So I’m not a programmer. I’m a secretary with a little bit of background in HTML/CSS, and my boss wants to use this WordPress plugin he bought to market one of his websites. This is just a little outside my area of expertise, apparently, because I can’t even get WordPress running. When I try to run the WordPress installer, it says I don’t have PHP working. When I try to run the PHP installer, it always “encounters an unexpected error.” I’ve tried multiple versions.

So I’m stuck and we’ve already paid for the plugin. It’s been like a month and I’m no less stuck than I was when we first started.

I think most of the people here are more well-versed in programming than I am (that’s not difficult!) so I’m wondering if there is ANY way someone can help me set this up so I don’t have to continue explaining to my boss that I’m trying, but that it’s way over my head. He seems to think that by virtue of being young and typing really fast and being able to change the colours on his other websites, I should have infinite knowledge of all things computer-ey.

Hoping that someone has the experience and patience to at least help me figure out where to begin. I’m running Windows Vista, if that makes a difference.

Thank you in advance! ;u; (That wasn’t as long as I thought it would be, thank goodness.)

  • The first thing that it seems like you’re getting confused with (which is common) is that WordPress isn’t installed on your PC. It needs ot be installed on a web server, so you’ll need to get a hosting account set up for it.

There’s a lot of details available in the New to WordPress page, so I’d suggest starting there as it will give you a lot better idea of what you need to do to get going.
