permalinks settings

    I’m trying to change my permalinks settings from default to Postname but when I change the settings and then try to access a page on my site I get a ‘This is somewhat embarrassing….’ message. When I change the permalinks setting back to default it works again. This is the only setting that seems to work. I tried deactivating all the plugins but same problem. Any clues?? Thanks!

    Is your .htaccess file being suitably modified?
    Have you checked with your hosts that mod_rewrite is running on your server?

    Thank you for replying. I checked with my host server and they confirmed that mod_rewrite is running and the .htaccess file is fine (I’m a WordPress end user and I remain clueless as to what these are). They worked out that I had goofed on some parent settings in the pages hierarchy. I changed the ‘parent’ setting to ‘main page’ on a few pages and now it’s all working perfectly. Thank you again for giving me the lead to get there.
