• Hey all!

I’m REALLY new to blogging and especially word press. I’ve gone all through the codex and still have a few questions….

#1 What’s the difference between a permalink and a trakcback?

#2 How can I place a trackback link after every post like at this blog:
    http://www.igottatellyou.com/blog/

Any and all help would be MUCH appreciated.

Great, so they are the same thing. I read the descriptions on the codex, but I didn’t see any difference.

So a permalink, trackback, and pingback are all the same thing just with different names?

That makes no sense. All this “new” blogging and XML stuff is like back in the dinosaur days of HTML when 10 different things were and did the same thing.

Thank you for clearing this all up for me. I really appreciate it.

They are not the same thing. 🙂

    1. Permalink (short for Permanent Link) is basically a URL to a particular post that can be bookmarked by people for posterity and got to as long as your website doesn’t go down.

It would sure be easy to remember and to get to a post with the URL of: website.com/archives/04/08/2005/My-lovely-post, rather than website.com/?p=42 where 42 is the post ID. As you enter your posts, the title of the post becomes the post-slug and that inturn ends up on the URL.

Pingbacks and Trackbacks _use_ your permalink’s to a particular post to do their magic. They essentially allow other people to reference your articles on their blogs.

So in the case of Trackback, you could write an entry on your blog, I could write a “reply” on my blog and trackback to your entry. You will see in your comments on the entry that I’ve tracked back and as such you can use that to get to my reply on my blog.

Pingback is not sending any content around, just telling each others blog that there is some mutual content.

For your and my sanities sake, let’s just assume that Pingbacks and Trackbacks are essentially the same. 🙂

*lol* My sanity is gone with all of this stuff….

#1 Okay I’m trying the trackback stuff, but it doesn’t seem to be working. I have a few friends who have blogs who are letting me test with their blogs.

#2 TrackBack (0) <<< I see that kind of link on other peoples blogs. How can I get that link to show up at the end of each of my posts so it shows how many trackbacks I have?

I think that’s what is REALLY driving me nuts. I have a link at the bottom of every post for people to email the post, the comments link, the permalink link, but I can’t figure out how to get the trackbacks link….

    Anyone know?

    Thanks

I have this same problem. My blog does not show “TrackBack (0)” anywhere on it’s pages and I cannot figure out how to get it to display.

Does someone have a step-by-step solution for making it show up?

By defualt, the number of trackbacks is included with the comment count. So when you see Comments (1) it might be one trackback/pingback or one comment. Several guides have been done to separate the comment and trackback count, so if you want to do that I suggest searching here, the codex and google too.

I assumed that might be so but I have found nothing here or in google and I am an advanced search user. I work for a search engine…lol.

Can you point us in the right direction?
