    Hi,

I tried to change the permalink of the page in my site and found that i’ve been having several problems with the permalink of my site. I posted this questions in Fixing WordPress Forum but was advised to post it here.

    1. The permalink of the page isn’t shown in Google, even I put the full URL of the page.

    2. I edited the permalink through “Edit Page” and updated, but the permalink stayed the old version.

    3. Deactivated all the plugins but no difference.

    4. Checked the search engine visibility and discourage search engines from indexing this site wasn’t ticked.

Is there anything that I’m missing to fix these problems? This is my first website. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Ricco,

    Thanks for reaching out.

You mentioned wanting the permalink of the page to show in Google. To be sure we understand what you mean, can you share a screenshot of other pages on your site where the permalink shows in Google?

    Hi Maybellyne,

    Thank you for your reply.

This is the screenshot of other pages on my site where the permalink shows in Google.

Now I can see the permalink that I’m having troubles with in Google. However, it shows Page Not Found when I click it.

If I go to the page from the menu button on the homepage, I can still see all the contents. The URL is exactly the same as one showing Page Not Found.

Could you please help me to fix this problems?

    @ricco05

There’s a difference in the permalink slug we noticed between the two URLs.

For example, this page permalink https:/cryptoabc.net/crypto-tax-in-australia-2021/ is showing on the search result is different from the page permalink i.e. https://cryptoabc.net/cryptocurrency-tax-in-australia-2021 that you accessed from the menu button.

    i.e.

    https:/cryptoabc.net/crypto-tax-in-australia-2021/ shows 404.
    https://cryptoabc.net/cryptocurrency-tax-in-australia-2021 is reachable

It is likely that you’ve recently changed the permalink slug of the already indexed URL as such Google hasn’t yet updated its index.

To resolve this, you can inspect both URLs via the URL Inspection tool from your Google Search Console. This will force Google to update the index. You may need to use it several times. This guide explains more: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/fetch-as-googlebot/.

    Hi Suwash,

Thank you so much for identifying the deference in the two URLs!
That’s right. Before posting this question, I was trying to find the cause of this problem, and deleted a draft version of the page, which I’ve been having problems with. The URL showing 404 must’ve been the URL of the draft version…

I have requested Indexing in Google Search Console as instructed, and now am waiting for update the index.

I just wonder if I changed the reachable URL to the URL showing 404 error, it would be a quick fix? Just because I just saw the article that there is no guarantee that Google updates the index…

@ricco05 If you’ve already requested indexing we wouldn’t recommend modifying the slug again as a fix. If you change the URL of a page, the best way to ensure it doesn’t create any issues moving forwards is to create a redirect from the old URL to the new one.

We are going ahead and marking this issue as resolved due to inactivity. If you require any further assistance please create a new issue.
