In our exams the user is supposed to get a 100% score so I’ve setup 2 grades. One that tells the user to try again and another that says they passed.

The issue is that the result output is confusing. It can say something like this.
    ————————-
You scored 140 points out of 143 points total.

Your performance has been rated as Excellent.

Your obtained grade is Try again
    ————————-

My custom grade is “Try again” in this case. But above the grade its says they are rated as excellent.

I think there need to be a way to either customize the message that appears or have it just show the grade and not this other text that gets generated somewhere.

The %%RATING%% variable is fixed and made only for a very quick start. I recommend not using it at all, it makes no sense to use the rating and custom grades.

Of course there is a way. Just edit the quiz and you’ll see the box to edit the final message.

We’ll make sure to remove the rating variable from the default message in the future to avoid confusion.
