Password protected pages not displaying properly

I am wondering two things:

1) how to troubleshoot the password protected pages that are showing up differently in Safari – for some people, the password field is invisible so it looks like there’s no place to add your password, but if you put your cursor over the field area, you can still type the password in, which is confusing. For others, the password field isn’t active at all.

2) how to edit the password protected pages.

I know I’m using an older version of WP (3.5.2) so that could be the issue. I’m afraid that if I upgrade, things will break on my site, so I’ve put off upgrading. I’m just wondering if anyone else has had this issue in later versions to determine if that’s the problem or if it’s something else.

Is there a plugin that could help either or both of these questions?
