• Hi,

I just had my hosting company change the URL of my site and I’ve notice the blog when clicking on the navigation link is looking for the old URL and takes quite awhile to load, but does eventually load. It didn’t do this before the URL switch. I asked the host company and they basically told me it’s up to the developer to go into the c-panel and manually edit the database to fix the issue.

So me not being a developer, and having no clue as to where, what, how to do this. If someone could be so kind as to help me I’d be extremely grateful.

  • You really need to work through the instructions here:

I’ve always done that because it is so easy to miss a step and have nothing work.

Ok I looked at that like a deer in the headlights and then accessed my database. I looked at the posts and under the column “Guid” it’s using the old URL for all the posts. So before I screw everything up, is this what needs to be changed to the new URL? And if so do I just select the edit button and manually edit the URL and replace it with the new URL? Gulp!

I used another plugin when I did a bunch of sites a few years back, but the documentation I quoted now recommends Velvet Blues Update URLs plugin.

Like you, I’m too scared to MANUALLY make wholesale modifications to the database like that.

Okay go get the Velvet Blues update urls plugin. Install it. Then for the old URL put in your old site domain name/url and for the new URL put in the new domain name/URL of the site. Don’t update GUID’s unless you’re starting a completely new site. Then run the script and it will go through and update all your URLs.

Thanks guys, I’ll try Velvet Blue and I’ll post how it works out!
