Deactivate all plugins, revert to Twenty Twelve theme and try again.
This is a live corporate website, so I’m not comfortable deactivating the site (plugins) and reverting to an old theme to try and troubleshoot. Is there a reason why this would be happening? No new plugins have been added or updated since yesterday, nothing is different at all from yesterday except that the site isn’t working.
As an update, I am able to make changes directly to the database and have them show, clearly not an ideal way to work with WordPress, but at least I can update content at the moment.
There is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just the start of basic troubleshooting and is a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.
Do you want to locate and, hopefully, fix the problem on your site? If “yes”, then please help us to help you and carry out the changes that we suggest.

There can be many. But how do I know without even seeing the site?

Well, the standard troubleshooting methods start with deactivating plugins and reverting to the WordPress default theme to find out what causes the problem. If you are not allowed to do that, you can only make wild guesses.
What version of WordPress are you using?
Ok, so looks like I accidentally reverted to the Twenty Twelve theme and now I can’t get the custom theme the site is built on working. Where do I make that change in the code. The custom theme doesn’t show in the admin.
I’m working on a website that has multiple sites under it. I checked the Spanish site and the site was still working, then I went into admin, and went to Themes and got the message “The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme.” so now the English and Spanish sites are working off the wrong theme. The other 4 language sites are still showing properly however.
I’ve gotten the correct theme back to working, had to make the changes directly in the database.
I then deactivated all of the plugins and reverted to the TwentyTwelve theme and now things are once again updating. Thanks for the help.
