Organic Groups

Hi Guys, I was wondering if tehre’s a wordpress equivalent to Drupal’s Organic Groups module?

I’m trying to build a site where small groups can set up their own areas to keep each other appraised of the progress of a project, invite other members and so on, all controlled by the group’s initiator.

Organic Groups in Drupal looked the way to go, but the module’s not been upgraded for the new release. Do any of you have suggestions as to how it could be done in WordPress?
