Ordering Events by Weight

Is there any way to add a field with weights, say 1-3 and then when adding an event, picking one of these numbers to order the event list with?
On our home page, we have the event widget which shows the last 5 events and they are ordered by date. But we have a ton of events from different groups and some events are more important than others and would need to be weighted differently so that they would display ahead of others. When adding the event, a user would choose the weight and then when the events get displayed, the events weighted 1 would be first, followed by 2 and 3.
Or if there is a better solution, I am all ears.
