Opening a new window/panel over a page.

Hello,
I am reaquainting myself with WordPress for a few projects.

I was looking for the best way to have a new small window open over a page which would contain further information on the link which was clicked. This way the user is not directed away from the page but can have a brief view of details whilst remaining on the page.
I thought that a popup plugin would do this but the one or two I have looked at I can’t see as being openable with a click on a link or am I missing something there. It is essentially a a popup window I am looking for but one which is opened by the user by a click on a link.
Also as I am using Site Origin widgets then I am looking for the small window to be integrated into the Site origin set up in some way.

Any helpful ideas are most welcome. Apologies if this has been aired somewhere before on another forum but I couldn’t find it.
