• I have version 2.0 running my blog right now, and I’ve tried doing the automatic update through fantastico, but it always tells me I have to do it manually.

The only problem is that with this sort of thing I’m rather hopelessly inexperienced. I’ve started done the road once, but was warned that all my customizations would be lost if I proceeded, and that I should back up. I know how to back up, but I have no desire to spend days trying to get the blog back to the way it is now.

I’m thinking there must be a way to preserve my settings, plug-ins, and customized theme while still doing the upgrade… And not lose the tons of posts I already have. But how? Is there a very, very simple, step-by-step guide to get from 2.0 up to the latest version, please?

  • 1. revert to the default theme.
    2. disable your plugins
    3. follow the “upload the files process, including the overwriting of the two THEMES that comes with wordpress.

    4. Run upgrade.php

Go into your admin area, and TRY to load your default theme — it wont work, too much has changed themewise from 2.0 to 2.5

Go into your admin area and TRY to load some plugins — you are prolly going to find a few that dont work.

Thats a step by step guide.

    Here‘s your walkthrough.

If you didn’t edit the default or classic themes or core-files, there’s little that can go wrong. Of course always have backup copies of the database, the theme, etc.

[edit] Okay, go for Whoo’s more detailed instructions and additionally also read the Codex article that I linked to.

Thanks to you both, that was perfect, and I’m now at 2.5! My theme’s a bit outdated so I can’t run the new sidebar widgets, but this is a definite improvement.

    Pax!

    youre welcome 🙂

Too late for the OP, bu for the benefit of anyone else upgrading from 2.0.x to 2.5.x:
