• I have been searching all over for an answer but could not find any. I want to know if downloading WordPress to my Mac and using it to edit blogs offline is only relevant if I have a dedicated/paid domain name, or can I still use it if all I have is the free WordPress address such as some_name.wordpress.com
    ?

No, you can only use a abc.wordpress.com address if your site is on their servers.

But if you are only working locally, you don’t need a “real” domain name.

Yes, my site is on the WordPress server. It is free. In other words, my site is blahblahxxxxx.wordpress.com. My question is: can I still download WordPress to my Mac, edit locally, and then upload/push the changes to blahblahxxxxx.wordpress.com

You can set up WP on your computer and do whatever you want with it, but you can’t move those changes to WordPress.COM sites – as there is no FTP or any other kind of file-level or server access for sites hosted there. You can export content from a local site and import to your WP.COM site. But for additional questions about the WordPress.COM side of this, you should ask on their forums:

If all you want to do is create new posts and publish them on your WP dot COM site, or edit ones that are already there, and do so when off line (not connected to the internet), then perhaps look into MarsEdit.

While it is not free, there is a free trial. I have been using it for years and it works very well.

Check it out on the App Store here:
