I have the same problem. I am searching for months for a simple image slider with thumbnails that works with default wordpress gallery. Thank you for this, will rate 5 stars if you fix this issue 😀
Version 1.5.3 of the plugin should be working properly with WP 3.9

Help Please! I have just uploaded my new website and bxslider is not working with the same problem. Was working fine previously!
