I see that you made a patch available but that isn’t the package that is given when you download or update the plugin. Do you plan to keep this running with the 4.9 branch? For what it’s worth there are plenty of people that aren’t interested in the new features that the 5.0+ branches bring. If you can keep this compatible that would be nice.

The update is available to download manually using the link: https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wp-cerber.8.9.5.2.zip

Keeping WordPress updated is in your best interests in terms of security, not fun features. I strongly urge you to update your WordPress to the latest release. Anyway, the next release will be compatible with WordPress 4.9. and newer. Please do not expect all new features to be available on outdated versions.

WordPress has been backporting security patches for quite some time. 4.9 gets the same relevant security patches that the new branches get, so does 3.7. I’m not sure how you come to the conclusion that the new versions are more secure simply because they are newer. A few of the more recent issues only affect the 5.x branches because of their new features.

Security patches fix discovered well-known vulnerabilities. New versions bring structural improvements and fix flawed code making it less possible to exploit not discovered vulnerabilities. Most vulnerabilities are found in old (outdated) pieces of software. Someday you will reach the point when your software gets an end-of-support status, and it will be painful and time-consuming to move to the next version because once you will have done that, you will face multiple compatibility issues. It’s some kind of technical debt you’re accumulating now.
