  • It is probably a permission issue. What is the error you get?

Try changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767, 775 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

I don’t actually get an error code. There are just no pictures. Just a square box with a red “x” in the middle. You are talking to an amateur here so instructions would be appreciated.

Esmi – where is the wp-content directory?

In the folder where you installed WordPress.

A link to a page demonstrating the problem might help. In the meantime, check your uploads path in Settings->Media. In most installs, it should be blank.

I installed wordpress through hostgator fantastico. It’s odd as I’ve never had this problem before and I’ve always installed the same way. A couple of web sites I purchased way back are the same as well. The images used to be there and now they have all gone. I didn’t touch a thing as they were just sitting there and I wasn’t doing anything with them. If you want to look it’s “www.lyndasblog.com”.

    Settings media are blank.

    Thanks in advance.

Is anti-hotlinking protection enabled on the hosting account? If so, disable it.

To echo esmi, a link would help.

It worked! Thanks so much Esmi. All my images came back on my other sites as well. I am with hostgator and found it easy. Just out of curiosity, why did it happen? Did the host change something? I certainly didn’t touch anything I don’t know about, which is my policy – don’t fiddle.

    Depends what the solution was.
