No formatting buttons on my version why?

I have a wordpress installed by GoDaddy and for some reason my version has no way to format my post. For example when I click on write post a page comes up that has a field for a title and the text for the post but it has no visual or code tab. So I don’t have any buttons to make hyperlinks, add images, make text bold etc.. Is this a version where you have to code everything manually? Would updating my version help?
