No alert and no confirmation

I just installed MailPoet and I’m very frustrated. I’m just about to uninstall it. I have placed a “subscribe to my newsletter” widget on my site using the standard form. In the settings I have checked that my email should be alerted when somebody subscribes. I have tested the php mail option and the test mail arrives to my email address. But, when I try to subscribe to my own site, not only do I not receive an alert to my email address, not only does the confirmation not arrive at the subscriber’s email address, but also, after pressing subscribe, it loads for a while and then just sits blank where the widget used to be. This is very frustrating. My site is robertfloris.com.
Going to look for other options that work now…
