@goldenagemedia – Performance issues are always on our radar and we also are planning a near future release primary devoted to performance improvements.
Otherwise, I would recommend making sure your images are appropriately optimized for your web site as well as a quality caching type plugin such as WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache (both at their defaults tend to help, be very careful with their settings when changing from the defaults).
Thanks!

Thank you for your prompt reply photocrati,
I always optimise clients images and resize them to 800x600px prior to importing into NextGEN, so I knew that couldn’t be the issue.
I’ve temporarily resolved the issue by reverting back to an older version of NextGEN (runs like a dream again), and will wait for this problem to be fixed in a later version.
Thanks again.
I have exactly the same problems.
WordPress Version: 3.9
NextGEN Version: 2.0.61
Theme: Twenty-Eleven
Picture size: 800 x 533
The new NG-Version slows down the page that much, that NO ONE CAN OPEN A GALLERY ANYMORE. A normal article without pictures loads very very slow since the update. The front page also loads very slow.
But a picture gallery can not even be opened anymore. It just stays with “loading images” but refuses to open the images. Timeout
One again I had to go back to 1.9.13!
PS:
Compared to 1.9.13 the 2.0.61 version needed 10 MB more memory!
Memory use of my page on 1.9.13: 53 mb
Memory use of my page on 2.0.61: 63 mb
I do not want to seem rude to you, but…

Performance issues are always on our radar…
Really? This is still present in 2.0.61 after half a year (Proportional increase of database queries). No answer, no fix (but tons of issues with site load speed). First of all, because of performance issues, many, including myself, can not use this plugin more.
I strongly advise your development team to do some basic things:
1. Stop testing this plugin on users, test it by yourself first
2. Stop trying to achieve World Record for the number of bugs at sometime working plugin 😉
All – Granted there are still instances where some users are experiencing significant “slow-downs” on their site but we are scheduling significant performance enhancements in a near future release. Please be patient.
Thanks!

Must say, the plug-in provides a fantastic visual element to a wordpress site. I can’t use it either at this point because clients say the sites load far too slowly (and the owner of one of my sites, my primary employer, gets very upset when the site loads slowly).
Perhaps it would help those of us that are struggling with performance if you summarized the key factors that allow the best performance. At this point, as an example, I have several sites hosted by Godaddy and others by HostGator. Neither work well when this plugin is enabled.
Any chance of some of the basic pointers being posted to get us on the right page while we await the performance enhancements?
Again, this is a great plug-in or there wouldn’t be complaints for help. Be well.
My temporary solution (which has worked for me) until Photocrati release their performance improved version is to revert back to a previous version of NextGen.
I changed my version of NextGen back to v1.9.13 and this solved my slow website issue.
Thank you Photocrati for addressing the issue and I look forward to the fix.
Hello,
I am experiencing the same issue with significant slow down on my home page. Should I revert to v1.9.13 or wait for an update?
Thanks!
