I’m trying to migrate my site from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and cannot for the life of me figure out how to install wordpress.

I set up hosting with Laughing Squid, I’ve had my domain name set, and I’m going through the installation on both WordPress.org and Laughing Squid and nothing is working. The step below is not working. Are there visual step by step instructions somewhere? Something a person with toddler-level web abilities can understand? A phone number I can call to get walked through it? Anything?
    Thanks!

Open wp-admin/install.php in your browser. It will take you through the process to set up a wp-config.php file with your database connection details.

If for some reason this doesn’t work, don’t worry. It doesn’t work on all web hosts. Open up wp-config-sample.php with a text editor like WordPad or similar and fill in your database connection details.
Save the file as wp-config.php and upload it.

  • No. You didn’t buy the theme on wordpress.com. You probably bought an option to customiser its CSS – which is completely different. You will need to purchase the theme itself to use it on your self-hosted WordPress site.

I purchased the theme using the Premium Themes page on my wordpress.com dashboard. Is that really not considered purchasing the theme?

Now, I have found the same theme on Woo Themes own website – but that is not how I initially purchased it. I would rather not dish out an extra $70 bucks if I can just transfer the one I already paid for.

But, if transferring is not possible then that’s another story.

Is that really not considered purchasing the theme?

Not as far as I am aware but if you want to confirm that, you’d need to contact the folks over at wordpress.com.

    And just found the confirmation:

When you purchase a premium theme, it is available for the lifetime of that blog. If you would like to use the same theme across multiple blogs, you’ll have to purchase the theme for each blog.

Note: Premium Themes are customized for WordPress.com usage only, and cannot be transferred to self-hosted WordPress.org sites

Ok, thank you for finding that information!
