I have set everything up on site as per the instructions on the link you shared, everything is already set up like that. The problem is not email activation, it is verification. So, when a new user registers on my site, they receive an activation email. After activation by the user, I still have to go to backend and manually verify the user or else they will not be able to log in until I mark them as email verified under users on backend.
I hope I am making sense.

Try to do a Theme/Plugin conflict test if your Theme
or another Plugin after an update is causing a conflict with UM.

I did 3 plugin and theme tests, everything is okay. There are no conflicts. Is there anything I could try?

Try to disable the UM caching if it’s a caching issue.
UM Settings -> Advanced -> General -> “Cache User Profile”
@01luntu
Try to enable PHP error logging if the debug will give some more info about this issue.
https://docs.ultimatemember.com/article/1751-enable-debug-logging
You will probably get a PHP log file with notices and errors in this file:
.../wp-content/debug.log
