    Hi,

I have just installed Wordfence to work with Ninja Firewall. NFW has alerted me to files that have been added by Wordfence – which is fine, I understand this needs to be done as part of the installation. However, I have the following 3 lines which I don’t understand:

    New file: [+] /home8/MYSITE/public_html/readme.98734b5XXXXXXc58f9eb3caXXXXXXXXX.html

(please note I have X’d out some numbers as I don’t know if this is specific to my site)

    Modified file:
    [!] /home8/MYSITE/public_html/wp-admin/error_log

    Deleted file:
    [-] /home8/MYSITE/public_html/readme.html

Are you able to tell me what these mean?

Thanks very much for your help.

In addition, I have enabled File Guard, but I noticed Wordfence was able to download their files. Should I have been informed BEFORE the files were downloaded or does NFW only let you know once the files have been downloaded? I’m just trying to understand how the alerts work.

    Many thanks again.

    Hi,

The alert means that someone renamed readme.html into readme.98734b5XXXXXXc58f9eb3caXXXXXXXXX.html. Maybe Wordfence did that?
Regarding /home8/MYSITE/public_html/wp-admin/error_log, that means that a PHP script had an error and that error was written to the /wp-admin/error_log.
You would need to download it and read it so that you’ll know what kind of error it is.

I do not understand what do you mean by “Wordfence was able to download their files” ?

Thanks for your reply. What I mean is when the files get amended/added/deleted, am I correct that NFW will only alert me of this and not actively stop it?

    Many thanks.

That’s correct, it will alert you but will not block anyone.
