Need Help In Making a Custom Theme

    on my index page i have navigation bar with 5 categories and I want to show 3 categories on index page layout
    in a div structure
    in category 1(div1) i want to show 4 recent post
    in category 2(div2) i want to show 6 recent posts
    in category 3(div3) i want to show 7 recent posts.
    i am using http://digwp.com/2010/02/blank-wordpress-theme/ and trying to making a custom theme. This is my first time making wordpress custom theme.
