Need Help getting slider to work

I cannot get the featured post or featured content slider to work in any theme that I’ve tried that has it. I have gone to the theme’s options and chosen to enable the slider but all I get is an empty box where the content should be. Is there some plugin that I have to install to get it to work or something else that I am missing? Please help.
