Navigation Bar-Customise

I am trying to find instructions on how to have the navigation bar sit on top of the image file in the header of my template page.

At present it is considerably obscuring the header image file.

I also would like to be able to reduce the space between the navigation links and the vertical lines in the bar itself.

I am using the word press web publishing facility provided by Godaddy.

My site is here I ma sure the problem will be obvious.

I have searched everywhere within the published help for both Godaddy and WordPress but has not been able to discover a solution.
