    Can anyone tell me whether any metadata is essential for a new user?

    I understand the database ERD and can see how user metadata links to the user table. I cannot, however, from checking any of my real-life databases, decide how or if adding a new user with no linked metadata would affect the operation of WordPress.

    Is it essential to have any particular metadata items in place when a new user is added? If so, which?
