• I have Apache 2.0.52, PHP 4.3.10, MySQL 4.1.8, and WordPress 1.2.2 (basically the latest of everything) on Windows XP (my own machine). The WordPress install fails at step #2 due to MySQL crashing. I can’t seem to find anything about how to deal with this. Any clues?

  • Are the packages you are using part of a recognised product – such as xampp / phpdev ?

They are not part of a recognized product. The WordPress insall page simply says you need PHP 4.1 or greater and MySQL 3.23 or greater. So I got the latest versions of both PHP, MySQL, and WordPress.
I already had Apache 2.0.52 and it works fine. MySQL seems to be working fine on its own as well.
