My website is down after updating plugins!

Hey

I was updating plugins and suddenly my website is showing this message” Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.”

I read that I have to remove the maintenance file from the FTP account but if I remove it what will happen? and will the website go back to normal if I wait a bit or there is no way other than removing the file?
