• Create a Network of WordPress Sites
You cannot install a network of sites with your server address.
You cannot use port numbers such as :.
    Return to Dashboard

Above is the error message I get after I have configured the wp.config.php file with the multisite line :-
    define(‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true);

I set up a subdomain with my hosting…what port numbers are they on about as none was shown on the error code above. I hopefully need a simple solution as I am not remote server savvy

  • what’s the URL you are installing on? Because both of those messages suggest you’re using an IP address like this:

    123.45.67.890:80

I actually am completely lost with multisites. What do I need to ensure I have set up with my hosting company (123reg.co.uk) to ensure I can install the multisite properly. I was forwarded a link called someting like wordpress codex..create a network which confused me even more. Like I said i am really new to wordpress so really need simple instructions.

ps with my business hosting i can have subdomains

Do you have a domain name?

The codex instructions *are* what you need. Unless this makes more sense:

    http://wpebooks.com/2010/09/how-to-enable-multisite-in-wordpress/

You need to install wordpress on a domain name or a subdomain. That URL has to be the one you’re accessing when you set up the network.

What url are you trying it on now?

I have spoken to webfusion and they talked me through my control panel and I went to where the DNS folder in and I had three items all with the same ips address… like in your instruction list I have one with an @ another with * nad a final one with www.

in your instructions you say “…..You also have to add a wildcard subdomain to your DNS records at your webhost,. In cpanel, just go to
Subdomains, and add one with a value of * that points to the public_html older where your WordPress
    install is.

I have pasted what I am looking and omitted the content numbers:-

    A, CNAME and TXT records
    Name Type Content Delete
    @ A xxxxxxxxxxxx CNAME TXT
    * A xxxxxxxxxxxx CNAME TXT
    www A xxxxxxxxxxxx CNAME TXT
    Add new entry
    A CNAME TXT

I am doing a dummy run and added the text to the wp.config.php define(‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true); file; and get the error message in wordpress:-

Create a Network of WordPress Sites
Error: You cannot install a network of sites with your server address.

You cannot use port numbers such as :.

    Return to Dashboard

I am hoping once I have managed to sort out/figure out the subdomains this will be sorted and I will be able to set up the multisites….sorry to be a bane at a basic level!!!!

when you see that message above, what URL are you on? As I stated ealrier, you only get it in some circumstances and neither of the urls you gave would give that.

what url are you using for your dry run?

Also, on shared hosts, you cannot have wildcard subdomains on anything but the MAIN domain.

ps I have the business package in 123reg

    http://www.123-reg.co.uk/web-hosting/

Could you look at the package and see if this is enough for me to use multisites

    My domain url is ihubbusiness.co.uk

is that the url you are on when you are creating a network? yes or no?
