Multiple Shortcodes on a page

While trying to set up a tabbed interface to display achievement lists via shortcode of various achievement types I discovered that only the first shortcode on the page gets rendered.
A little Googling and I found this: https://github.com/opencredit/badgeos/issues/122
That topic was closed and never revisited, but it looks like this was intentional. Any reason why in particular? Moreover, Is there some way to override that global statement?
