    Hi Everyone,

Ok so I’m going crazy haha. Hopefully you guys can help.

I’m trying to move a wordpress site i’ve built from one domain to another. I’m working with Dreamhost (who are really slow to respond and difficult to work with… not recommended)

So i’m looking for a step by step guild to completely move the installation to work on another URL. If you wish to tackle this feat, please don’t assume anything as I believed I’d gone through all the necessary steps but have been unsuccessful so far.

For reference, here’s what I did

copied all the files in my ftp to my desktop
backed up the sql database via phpmyadmin
set up the domain on my server
set up a new database on my server
uploaded the files to the new domain on my server
uploaded the sql backup on my new database
changed my config file to point to the new database
add ‘defines’ to update the urls of the wordpress installation.

I’ve ran out of time by 4 days :-/ urgh. So any help would be greatful! Thanks!!

I want to give a big thanks to Ankit Singla who just guided me through the process via skype and team viewer. Finally got there by uploading a copy of the sql from the site to the new database, and then using a php search and replace which changed all the reference of the old database.

Should have worked at this point, but didn’t, only to find I still had the old database referenced in my config file from earlier this morning… (i’ve lost track with how many times i’ve edited that bleedin thing haha)

    Thanks Ankit

    Not a mistake 🙂

Same server, same DB server, same database name, same user name, same password. I looked at his server, and I totally get why it sounds weird, but he really was pointing the new domain to the old DB, without changing it. He shouldn’t need to make any of those changes.

We probably could have just pointed the new domain to where the old one was installed, but I don’t know if he’ll want to recover the old one and use it again 🙂

    @ respected Mika — You’re absolutely correct.

But, he actually started the topic “Moving WordPress” so I went that way .

But, you’ve correctly figured out that he just wanted to use a new domain.

Hey so long as he’s up and working, I’m happy 🙂 Thank you very much, ak, you rock 😀

oh and quick note: how do I remove the references in this post to specific URLs (as I don’t want them searchable by Google for obvious reasons, and viewable in relation to the post in the distant future).

It is not the general policy to edit or delete forum posts. When a post is made and people contribute answers to an issue, that then becomes part of the community resource for others to benefit from. Deleting posts removes this added value. In extreme circumstances, the moderation team might be persuaded to remove sensitive information but. generally, your best course of action is not to publish anything that you wouldn’t want to be public. I’m sorry but this is not an extreme case.

Just for future reference, there’s a free plugin which changes the url’s and new server path.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-migrate-db/

    wp migrate db

You can use this for migrations to a new server and/or domain
