I was working in a subdirectory installation of WP with a live site running in the root directory. Everything was finished and I wanted to make the site live with a default to the WP site I had created.
Using FTP I moved all the live site stuff into a cgi-bin folder and copied and moved all my WP stuff (wp-admin,wp-content,wp-includes and index.php file to root). Of course when this didn’t work I started reading and found that this was not the right way to go about it.

Not sure where to begin to correct this. Should I reinstall WP in root?
    how do I recover?

  • You made backups right? RIGHT?

    Read here: Moving WordPress

If all you did was move WP out of a subdirectory and into root, move it back and move the old site back to root while you sort everything out.

Check out WP Migrate DB. I use it in production settings often.

Okay. I can breathe again. I put everything back into the original subdirectory it was in before and got it working just fine. Now I can follow the instructions and move it properly. I think that I needed to inform the database that I was moving everything else.
At any rate all is good.

Thank you Andrew. I got your post after I had it straight. I will check out WP Migrate DB.
