Make sure of two things:
1) That the theme is reasonably current (WP 1.5 and above)
B) When you unzip the theme, you might be getting an extra “layer” of directories. For instance, I just unzipped a new theme and got something like:
themeNamethemeNameall my files including style.css
Well, that’s no good. Too many folders and when I uploaded it WP reported it as broken. Once I got that extra “themeName” folder out of there, all was good.

The extra layer didn’t, fortunately, happen with me. What I have noticed, however, is that all the style.css files, and there are three of them, have been renamed to style[1].css, style[2].css and so on. These three files are of differing sizes, so presumably all are needed, despite all having the same name. Removing the additional number is not going to help …
Another skin that I downloaded has four style.css files and a third has only one but it is named stylesmf.css and that doesn’t seem to wish to work either – not even when I rename it styles.css.
Where are you finding these themes? Are they actually for WordPress? Have you tried looking at themes.wordpress.net?
