Same issue, replaced NEW version with last working version of backWPup. All is working fine again…..solution, DO NOT, update…
I am having the same issue on several sites when attempting to run manual backups after updating to BackWPup version 3.2.4 (using WP version 4.4.2).
Rolling back to 3.2.3 allows me to run successful backups.
I also have Bulletproof Security installed on these sites, and came across this which may be helpful to Daniel in identifying the problem:

(I did not find any errors related to BackWPup in my BPS logs.)
I can verify that BackWPup version 3.2.4 DOES work on sites I manage that DO NOT have Bulletproof Security installed.
Not sure if this is the case for other people reporting this problem.

Same problem here. Using cloudflare with flexible ssl which may causing the problem. Can’t downgrade to previous version. Funny thing is. BackWPup works on one site, but not on the other. Can’t see any big difference betweent the two, both are behind cloudflares flexible ssl.

Same issue here, latest plugin and WP. Also tried reverting to 3.2.3, but still get errors:
“The HTTP response test get an error “SSL connect error”Not expected HTTP response body:”
(note it doesn’t actually show any output from the HTTP response)
I also have CloudFlare SSL.
Any idea when we can expect a fix for this?
Same issue here…is anybody “on” this? I’d appreciate a response as it is critical to my client’s site.

I’m also experiencing this error on two sites on two different hosts.
I am experiencing this problem as well. I was running a version 3.2.1 of backWPup – I updated to 3.2.4 and the problem continued. The error I see now in the log file has to do with “cannot authenticate MySQL database”. Yet, I checked my settings for the job and I have “no authentication” enabled. How can that be?
Received same error after upgrade to 3.2.4. Even older version 3.2.3 and 3.2.2 produce same server connect http response header. Tried disabling all plugins, cancel cron job, and still not working. Happens on several wp sites with different hosts.
Backwpup runs wp-cron test and http request fails.

Just to add a positive message: The planned backup jobs DO work! Only starting through the interface is not working.
When I deactivate and delete plugin I continue to see “old/cached” settings including administrator role for backwpup.
How do I completely remove backwpup settings to test clean install?
WordPress has now removed the page for this plugin from the WordPress repository. I’m sure that was intended to be helpful by keeping new users from downloading the plugin until it is fixed, but it also keeps those of us who installed the bad update from accessing the previous version, which has been reported to work by most people in this thread. May I suggest that instead of entirely removing the plugin from the repository, you restore it, and just remove the problematic update?
