    Hi,

I am hoping someone can help as I am completely baffled by the process of moving my wordpress.com blog to a wordpress.org self hosted site.

All the guides from the wordpress.com side say to export the XML form then everything I read on my new host WPEngine requires other things like PHP databases. I do not have access to this on wordpress.com

Something that should be pretty straight forward seems to be very complicated. I am not sure exactly what I am supposed to do to get information that I do not have access to.

Alternatively should I just import the content into my new theme and be done with it. Do I need to use the migration tool?

    Thanks,

    Clare

WPEngine does offer direct database importing, but .com doesn’t give you access to the database, so you have to use the XML export/import. And you don’t have access to the wp-content folder, either. But you can import the XML file and move your images.

Install WordPress at WPEngine – or they may have an auto installer – and import your XML file and images. Then repoint DNS. WPEngine doesn’t have a specific guide for .com imports, so you need to read this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

    Thanks for your help.

I am now trying to import the xml file (3.2mb) and the importer seems to be stuck. I have a fast internet connection and it does not seem to be processing the file at all.

    How long should it take?
