Messed up "special characters"

Your plugin is a lifesaver.
Since the latest update, my site (which uses WPML) was screwed – no menus, messed up sliders, sidebars, etc. I enabled error log, and found it grew about 80MB every minute!
Checking the file, I found loads of “MySQL Server Has Gone Away” errors.
After installing your plugin, the menus etc are loading.
However, the special characters (my site is non-English) are messed up – in fact question marks show instead of special characters. I suspect this might be because your plugin may be using a Latin encoding/collation instead of utf-8.
Any suggestions for fixing this?
