Menus not showing as expanded

Trying to show a client a mobile solution for his WP site. I installed the latest version of WPTouch on my test WP site, no other plugins installed. And yet when the site comes up on a mobile device, the menus don’t appear until one clicks the “expand” button – the thing with three parallel horizontal lines. Clicking on it presents the menus normally. In this case, iPhone 4S + Safari.

Client won’t go for the Pro version unless I can show him what it will look like with the free plugin. Primary menu MUST be there when the mobile site opens. WPTouch 3.1.4
