Let me start by saying I love the MLA plugin and have used it in the past with great success. Currently, however, I cannot access the media library plugin. I keep getting 404 errors every time I try to launch it.

Thanks for your report – sorry you’re having trouble with MLA.

You wrote “I keep getting 404 errors every time I try to launch it.” Can you tell me more about what you mean by “launch it” – are you trying to launch the Media/Assistant admin screen, the MLA settings screen or a front-end screen that uses an MLA shortcode? If it’s a front-end screen, can you post the source text of the shortcode that’s not working for you?

Thanks for any additional details you can provide. The “page I need help with” in your post seems to be loading without errors.

Hi David, thanks for the quick reply! In terms of launching, I’m trying to launch the media/assistant admin screen (sorry, you’re right, I wasn’t that clear in my initial post), but it never opens.

Thanks for the additional information. It would be helpful if you can answer a few more questions:

First, do you get an actual 404 page or something else, such as “You do not have permissions…”, or do you just see a blank screen or just the header parts?

Second, can you access the Settings/Media Library Assistant General tab? You can find that under the Settings admin menu or by clicking the “Settings” link in the Plugins/Installed Plugins Media Library Assistant entry.

Finally, what do you see in the browser’s address bar when you try to access the Media/Assistant admin submenu? It should end in something like /wp-admin/upload.php?page=mla-menu You should also see it in the browser’s status bar (screen bottom) if you hover over the “Assistant” link under the Media admin menu.

Hi David, I’m getting an actual 404 page.
Message in middle of page is: “404 Page not Found!
Would you like to search for the page”

Yes I am able to reach the settings/media library assistant general tab

Message in browser address bar is:http://www.imagesbyvandam.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upload.php?page=mla-menu

    Thanks

Thanks for your answers; this is most curious. The only way I have found to get an actual 404 page is to damage the URL.

I notice that your URL has /wordpress/wp-admin/ – are you loading WordPress from a subdirectory on your site?

Are you able to access the WordPress Media/Library screen with this link:

    http://www.imagesbyvandam.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upload.php

If you can access the MLA Settings screen you can go to the “Debug” tab and see if there are any useful messages in the error log. Does that yield anything of interest?

    Thanks for your patience!

Hi David, I’m definitely not a wordpress expert, so hopefully I’ve answered the following in a helpful way πŸ™‚
when I use filezilla, here is the directory structure that leads to my wordpress installation (I’ve substituted “username” for my actual user name here): /home/username/imagesbyvandam.com/wordpress/wp-content

Yes, I can access the wordpress Media/Library screen through the link you provided (I am using the plugin “Real Media Library” to enhance my media library interface.)

The debug tab has “0” messages.

Thanks for following up. I am still at a loss to explain your problem.

I appreciate the reference to “Real Media Library”. I assume this is the premium plugin from “MatthiasWeb”. It would be helpful to know if your MLA 404 problem goes away without this plugin – can you temporarily disable it to run a test?

Either way, it would be more effective to continue this investigation offline. If you give me your contact information and I will send you an email address you can use to send more information to me. You can use the Contact Us page at our web site:

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your help and your interest in the plugin.

Just tried deactivating Real media library by MatthiasWeb, but it didn’t change the outcome

Thanks for working with me offline to resolve this problem. Further investigation revealed:

    1. The “Entries per page” for the Media/Assistant admin submenu was set to 500.
    2. All four “Where-used Reporting” options (Settings/Media Library Assistant General tab) were all enabled.

The where-used reporting options are useful if you want to know where your Media Library items are used, but they take a lot of database processing to compute. Although the processing is only done for the items appearing in the Media/Assistant submenu table, the entries per page setting was high enough to cause a significant processing time.

The two factors combined caused the screen to time out, returning the 404 Not Found result. Disabling the where-used options and reducing the entries per page setting to 20 corrected the problem.

I am marking this topic resolved, but please update it if you have any problems or further questions regarding the above explanation and solution. Thanks for your help and your patience during the investigation and resolution. Thanks as well for your continued interest in the plugin.
