From which background colour, white?
Yes. I tried entering custom css to override using #sidebar as the id, and it didn’t work.
Would it work using .widget-area?

Have you created a child theme? If not, you’ll need to in order to accomplish this.

You just need to create a Child CSS file.

I don’t think changing .widget-area would affect the entire white background.
#primary and #secondary affect the entire sidebar(s).
there is option in mantra settings for colors use it
