make masthead transparent

    Hello
    I’d like to make the masthead transparent if possible. The person who owns the site would like to load a picture into the background (its a tallish pic to go down left side) but have it visible where the header area is, rather than have it be just blocked off or covered up by the header. Is that possible. I have made a child theme that I am working on.
    I hope what I am asking makes sense.
