make a large e-commerce store with WP

Howdy there,
This is less of a technical question, and more opinion oriented. I’ve seen a few threads on this, and I may have put this topic in the wrong spot, but I wanted to get some thoughts from other people about this.
I am considering the possibility of using WordPress and a plugin like e-commerce to run a big store. I thought it was a bad idea at first, but then I started considering some of the advantages. I think over the past few years, WP has grown leaps and bounds. Aside from being a way to blog, it has come to be a terrific CMS, it has an awesome support community, and most importantly, and because of those things and the sheer amount of dedicated users, I truly believe it is on the bleeding edge of code.
Does anybody have anything they would like to share, or perhaps their own examples of using wordpress in e-commerce, and what plugins worked out and what ones didn’t.
