main url vs. main url/wordpress

I think I know the answer, but I want to confirm it before I try it. I originally installed WordPress in a \wordpress folder.

Whan I set a static page as the frontpage, I still have to type main url/wordpress for it to show up. If I just type main url, my old html index.htm file shows up.

Do I have to move the wordpress files into the main upperlevel folder of the site using the “moving wordpress” article I have seen mentioned?

I want to install wordpress on another site to do the same thing. when I install it for the 1st time, should I install it in the main folder, not a wordpress folder (default).?
