[mailchimp] Javascript error on email validation

I am getting the following Javascript (jQuery) error upon a successful email submission in the form in the footer of a site I am working on:

If the validation fails I get the proper fade-out warning, but on a successful validation I get the error and no message (although the form does submit). Any ideas why, or of a workaround? I am willing to edit the mailchimp plugin if necessary. In searching the forums it looks like this bug has been around for a while:
