I have just made the switch from PC to Mac (OSX), and am no longer able to open any of the WordPress backups I have made over the past 2 years. I receive the Archive Utility message: Unable to expand “name-of-file.zip” into “Desktop” (Error 2-No such file or directory)

FYI, I replaced the long, zip file name with “name-of-file.zip” for the purpose of this question. Recent searches on the net show variations of this question popping up, but these are for other types of zip files, and replies suggest that corrupt zip files might be the culprit (which is not the case for my situation).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    JL

  • Not a WP issue, but there are many free programs that will open zip files on Macs — Stuffit is one. Google will find many others for you.

    (Excellent move, BTW :))

    Hi WPyogi,

Thanks for the quick reply. I downloaded and tried Zipeg but was unsuccessful opening the file. I also tried to open it with the Terminal application on my MAC (no luck again).

Sorry, I did not realize this was not a wp problem. I will look for a solution elsewhere.

    Cheers.

    Try this one: http://www.stuffit.com/mac-expander.html

I suppose it is possible that the files you have are incompatible with Macs period — especially if they are old. I have not heard of that in recent years, but file formats can be tricky. In that case, you could maybe open them on a PC and re-zip in a Mac compatible format?

No worries, just that the powers that be try to stay on WP — otherwise the forums would be all over the place!

    Hi again,

Thanks for this suggestion. I downloaded Stuffit, but my machine won’t let me open it. This is the first time this has happened since I enabled any file to be downloaded. I am probably missing the obvious. I will try to track down someone from work who could also help. Thanks very much anyways. Regards, JL.
