I’m sorry but I think your expression “the whole site breaks” is not the best choice in this case. If you want to have a static home page, that page will display as it is. If you want to have the frontpage with all the sections available in customize , you just need to select Your latest posts.

I think my choice of words is very accurate. If I choose static home page and then choose the full width template, it doesn’t work. I understand that in order to have the sections show on a static home page would require coding. My comment was directed to the fact that standard WordPress functionality does not work when selecting the static home page.
